Ecolabel for tourism
In Austria, undertakings of the tourism branch can be awarded with the Austrian Ecolabel (‘Umweltzeichen Tourismus’) for their environmental-friendly management and social competence.
This project of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management supports the quality and environmental awareness of the Austrian tourism and leisure industry.
An accordant directive determines which criteria must be fulfilled by a company to attain the Ecolabel for tourism. The list of criteria includes all sectors that are relevant for the gastronomic business. The requirements range from ecological purchase (of e.g. food, cleansing material, office supply etc.) to demands on the equipment, to regulations concerning the environmental-friendly and economic handling with resources using water and energy.
Additionally, environmental-friendly disposal of waste, the design and maintenance of the exterior as well as initiatives for the reduction of traffic are included in the criteria. Furthermore, social regulations and accordant information should guarantee, that all employees support the concept of the Ecolabel and that guests/customers can participate, too.
With concrete criteria it is shown, how a gastronomic undertaking or a hotel can achieve positive environmental effects and effects that raise quality. It is also shown how they can realise cost-savings (particularly water and energy costs).
